The community broadcasting sector welcomes the report of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications, Information Technology and the Arts which recommends that the Government commit an additional $10 million in core funding each year to fund station managers, increase targeted funding to $5 million to provide for station equipment upgrades and an additional $0.5 million for training initiatives.
"Core funding for community broadcasting has simply not kept pace with the increase in the number of stations over the past decade, " said John Martin, President of the Community Broadcasting Foundation. "Whilst we appreciate the targeted funding that has been provided for training and infrastructure in recent years, the Tuning in to Community Broadcasting report shifts the focus to the core needs of stations in terms of support for management." The five community broadcasting peak bodies, the CBAA, the NEMBC, the AICS, RPH Australia and the CMA, call on the Government to immediately adopt the report's recommendations along with a range of other identified funding needs including content development and funding for community television (www.cbonline.org.au). Tuning in to Community Broadcasting recommends that the Government:
- Increase annual core sector funding by $10 million
- Increase annual targeted funding for station equipment
upgrades to $5 million
- Provide an additional $0.5 million annually for training resources; and
- Introduce an accountability mechanism to increase the Government advertising spending on community broadcasting stations.
Significantly the report attests to the "immense value that the community broadcasting sector contributes to Australian society" and acknowledges high program quality and the dedication of volunteers.
