Help Community Broadcasting Lobby for more funding !

In July community broadcasting launched a national campaign, Value our Voices, for increased federal funds. They need your help to succeed.

The National Ethnic & Multicultural Broadcasters’ Council (NEMBC) is an integral part of the campaign, which calls for an additional $16.8m, on top of the $8.1m currently provided by Canberra.

Ethnic community broadcasting is an essential part of multicultural and multilingual Australia, with over 100 stations delivering around 1500 hours of programs a week in 97 languages.

NEMBC President George Zangalis (and Chair of Melbourne’s 3ZZZ) says federal funding is a small part of station operating costs. “We raise over 80% of funds from sponsorship, donations and fundraising. But the grants are important and over the last decade they have fallen in real terms by 40%. This is because federal funding grew by only 26% and hasn’t matched the 54% growth in station numbers (to over 480) since 1996/7.

Our main source of funding, the per-hour rate for program content development, was $48 per hour in 1996/7. Today it is only $35 per hour. This means reduced program access for new communities and a strain on the quality of existing programs. Training is another top priority for us.”

The NEMBC urges all communities to support the campaign and help maintain your local programs and stations. “You and your organisation can send a letter to Senator Coonan, the Minister for Communications or Senator Conroy, the ALP Shadow Minister. You can send a letter directly from the campaign website at www.valueourvoices.org, or download a letter and send it yourself (c/o Parliament House Canberra 2600) by going to our site www.nembc.org.au. If you need a speaker or a campaign kit contact the NEMBC office on 03 9486 9549.
