Broadcast skills for Indigenous Students

2007-06-15 08:49:07 WST
By Olivia Holmes

It has been a long time in the making, but finally, Yahning Mia, radio broadcast workshops for young Indigenous people has commenced with a workshop at the Rockingham campus of Challenger TAFE.

Year 10 students from surrounding high schools enjoyed their first session with facilitator Derek Nannup from Yirra Yaakin Aboriginal Theatre Company. This is the first of a series of workshops which will teach the students all about making radio, the elements, media law, researching, conducting an interview and presenting information on air. Students will also learn technical skills, such as digital audio editing and panelling for a radio program.

Yahning Mia will also address some serious issues such as family violence through interviews with Aboriginal counselling services and DCD employees.

The broadcast series has been funded through the Department of Community Development’s Indigenous Community Partnership Fund. Many organisations have helped 6EBA with planning the course including Yirra Yaakin, Abmusic, Outcare, Yorgum and City of Bayswater.

If you are interested in having broadcast workshops and a live broadcast from your school, please contact the Station.
